There are very few people in the industry who enjoy challenges instead of being in their comfort zone. When you get laid back, you often miss out on huge opportunities while others who hustle get to add a feather on their cap. One such applaudable alumni is Durgesh Chaubey and in this blog we will learn about him and about his journey with Coding Ninjas.

About Durgesh Chaubey

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Durgesh came to the city of dreams, Mumbai to complete his further studies. He pursued his bachelor’s specialising in Information Technology. Furthermore, he  completed his masters from Mumbai itself. Currently, he is associated with MasterCard as an Software Development Engineer – 1.

Durgesh mentions that while pursuing his master degree, he got himself enrolled in Coding Ninjas and soon after completing his course he got an opportunity to from Mastercard.

Journey with Coding Ninjas

“Back in December 2021, I joined Coding Ninjas and I would say I learned a lot, even more than what I learned at college. Here, at Coding Ninjas, the teaching faculty is really very good. They have great teaching support and even the faculties are well experienced. Some of them are the alumni of top colleges like Stanford University, while others have worked in Amazon. Learning from them directly is a great experience in itself without any doubt.”

Are the lessons learned at Coding Ninjas still helping you?

“A lot! I took up the Full Stack and MERN Stack course along with  Data Structures in Java. This course covers everything which the industry demands from a good engineer. They teach Data Structures along with which they provide you with an ample amount of questions to practise. They even give you the knowledge about what is going on in the industry from an engineer’s perspective. Hence, the course covers everything from design of the software to the maintenance and deployment of it. So, I feel grateful to have joined this course.”

What did you do differently to get an offer from MasterCard?

“From the day Mastercard published the job requirement, the placement team of Coding Ninjas was constantly in touch with me. They have assisted me greatly to prepare for  the tests and interviews. The team came with the pre-preparation talk and a guide about what all to focus on, be it topics to communication skill. One of the team members from Coding Ninjas’ was there from the very start, that is from the form filling stage till I received my offer letter.”

How does a day look like in Mastercard as an SDE – 1 ?

“Everyday at Mastercard is exciting and challenging to be very honest.  At Mastercard, they provide a lot of facilities to their employees. As soon as you enter, you will see so many vending machines. You can chill at the cafeteria and grab whatever you want. People over there are highly-skilled yet so kind. They will help you with anything and everything. Talking about my first day at Mastercard, I would say it was pretty good. I received a very warm welcome and from the second day onwards I was given the tasks to work on.”

What skills do you require to go beyond the role of an SDE – 1?

“At Mastercard there isn’t any specific criteria set as such. As soon as you join them and  you complete one year over there, you are eligible for any other role you want to switch to. If you are asking about the skills that are required for the role of an SDE-1 then it would be well versed with JAVA. So, if you have a good command over JAVA then the ball is in your court.”

What are your strategies to overcome professional challenges?

“To overcome challenges in the corporate world you will have to have patience. You will have numerous tough times above which there will be office politics, jealousy and what not. However, if you have patience and know how to deal with such a situation you can go a long way. Also, there will be people who will uphold you, you just need to find them.”

What makes you unique on the personal front?

“I am someone who likes challenges instead of being in the comfort zone. Before joining Mastercard, I used to do a lot of  freelance work and I chose those works which are challenging. By that I get to know my capability and  learn something new.”

Any career building ideas for the budding coders?

“For the current year students, I would like to say that do not get dependent only on the theories, solve as many problems as you can. Also, don’t just fix yourself on one programming language rather focus more on Data Structures , problem solving and logic building skills. This is  because when you will be sitting for interviews for product based companies they won’t ask you questions related to just one programming language but what they will be looking for is the problem solving skills and what logic you are giving to them.”

Any philosophy that you follow in life?

“I saw this video in which it was said, we all have the same time, be it you, me or anybody on the earth. We have 24 hours in a day. It depends on us how we utilise it. So, try to spend as much time as you can doing something productive and make the most of the time you are getting in a day.”

Message for the Ninjas’ family!

“You guys are doing an amazing job. I wish that you keep bringing the good work to the ed-tech industry. I myself have referred Coding Ninjas to many of my friends and even they have found the courses very helpful.”
